Volunteering

The Stables is run entirely by volunteers, and we invite you to join our number. If you would like to get involved, please email us or speak to the box office team. We will pass your details on to the relevant head of department.

We ask that all volunteers become Stables members.

We need volunteers in the following fields:

• Acting   Audition notices will be mailed on request.
• Art gallery   Inviting artists, helping with hanging exhibitions and at private views.
• Bar   Serving customers, usually 6 pm to 11 pm on performance evenings.
• Box office   Daytime or evening shifts, at least twice per week.
• Directing   Plays and directors are chosen by the artistic planning group. We also need assistant directors and production assistants.
• Front-of-house manager   Responsibility for the comfort and safety of theatregoers—before, during and after the performance.
• Front-of-house steward   Checking tickets. Selling programmes, coffee and sweets before the performance and during the interval.
• Gardening   Keeping the grounds of the Stables clean and attractive.
• Props   Sourcing or making the props used during a production.
• Set building   Hands-on work, usually evenings and weekends.
• Stage crew   Behind the scenes during the run of a production.
• Wardrobe   Making and altering costumes, or supervising the wardrobe for an entire production.

In any of these areas the main thing you will need is enthusiasm; we can provide the necessary training.

Each time you volunteer ask another member to sign the back of your membership card. Ten signatures entitle you to one free ticket to a Stables production (maximum two free tickets per year).
